Tucked just a few blocks from Pub Street, Wat Preah Prom Rath offers a serene escape and a glimpse into everyday Buddhist life in Cambodia.

Visiting Wat Preah Prom Rath: A Peaceful Temple in the Heart of Siem Reap

Siem Reap is known for its world-famous templesโ€”but not all of them require a tuk-tuk ride. One of our favorite surprises was Wat Preah Prom Rath, a beautiful pagoda right in the heart of town. Just steps away from the river and tourist buzz, this working monastery offers calm, color, and a dose of living Cambodian culture. If youโ€™re looking to slow down and see a side of Siem Reap most travelers skip, hereโ€™s why this temple is worth a visit.

A Temple with a Story

Wat Preah Prom Rath dates back over 500 years and is one of the oldest active pagodas in Siem Reap. Legend has it that the monk Preah Prom Rath traveled across the Tonle Sap in a boat made from a piece of ironโ€”miraculously surviving an attack by pirates. Inside the temple grounds, youโ€™ll find a giant reclining Buddha and a vivid statue of this legendary boat, honoring his journey.

The temple has been rebuilt and restored over the years, but its spirit and community roots remain strong.

What Youโ€™ll See Inside

  • Reclining Buddha Statue: Peaceful and impressive, set inside a beautifully decorated hall.
  • Colorful Murals: Walls depicting scenes from the Buddhaโ€™s life and local legendsโ€”bright, bold, and full of detail.
  • Shrines and Sculptures: Smaller stupas, prayer wheels, and statues scattered around the grounds.
  • Quiet Courtyards: Palm-lined paths, lotus ponds, and shaded benches perfect for resting or reflection.

Youโ€™ll also see monks going about their day, offering a peek into real-time temple life.

Why Itโ€™s Worth Visiting

  • Location: Itโ€™s incredibly centralโ€”just a 5-minute walk from Pub Street or the riverside.
  • Atmosphere: Peaceful, uncrowded, and genuinely local, even though itโ€™s in the middle of town.
  • Photography: The templeโ€™s colors, details, and lighting make it great for photosโ€”just be respectful, especially near monks and prayer spaces.
  • Cultural Value: A quiet way to learn about Cambodian Buddhism without a tour group or ticket booth.

How to Visit Respectfully

  • Dress modestly: Cover shoulders and knees. Bring a scarf or sarong if needed.
  • Remove shoes before entering temples or halls.
  • Be quiet and respectful: This is an active place of worship, not just a sightseeing stop.
  • Ask before taking photos of people, especially monks.

Final Thoughts

Wat Preah Prom Rath is a reminder that you donโ€™t need to go far to find beauty and meaning in Siem Reap. Itโ€™s calm, culturally rich, and incredibly easy to visit between meals, markets, or museums. If you’re looking to experience something genuine without leaving the city center, make time for this temple.

On The Go Phone Charger

We purchased two of these because we loved it so much. We are constantly using our phones, taking photos and videos while we travel, and never want to run out of charge. These portable chargers keep our phones fully charged at all times!

Disposable Hotel Slippers

We love hotel slippers, and some hotels give them and some do not, so we like to be prepared. Plus, the best part is, we can throw them out when we leave the hotel and make our suitcase lighter instead of carrying traditional bedroom slippers that we use at home.
