Mykonos to Santorini: How We Made the Journey and What We’d Do Differently

Traveling from Mykonos to Santorini sounds simple—but here’s what really happened. Learn from our trip mistakes and get smart tips for a smoother island hop.

Mykonos to Santorini: How We Made the Journey and What We’d Do Differently

When we decided to hop from Mykonos to Santorini, we expected a breezy ferry ride and instant island bliss. What we got was a crash course in Aegean travel logistics. From choosing the wrong ferry to getting sunburned while waiting at the port, here’s how our trip actually went—and what we’d change next time.

Booking the Ferry: Our Mistake #1

We waited too long to book our ferry and ended up with only one option: a packed SeaJets high-speed catamaran during peak wind season. Lesson learned: book early, especially in summer.

Arriving at the Port: Mistake #2

We mixed up the Old and New Port and showed up at the wrong one. Cue a frantic taxi dash and near-miss. Always double-check which port your ferry departs from (for Mykonos, it’s the New Port at Tourlos).

The Ferry Ride: Beautiful but Bumpy

While the scenery was stunning, the ride was rough. The Meltemi winds had kicked up and even seasoned travelers looked queasy. We skipped breakfast—a blessing in disguise.

What We Would’ve Packed Differently

  • Motion sickness bands or tablets
  • A small backpack instead of wheeled luggage (there were lots of stairs)
  • Layers: the air conditioning onboard was freezing

Arriving in Santorini: Finally Worth It

Getting into Santorini’s Athinios Port is breathtaking—but chaotic. No signage, tons of drivers shouting, and steep switchback roads. We recommend pre-booking a transfer instead of relying on taxis.

The Upside: It Was Still Worth It

Despite the hiccups, the journey between Mykonos and Santorini offered unforgettable views and a true sense of adventure. We saw dolphins, met fellow travelers, and soaked up island energy from deck to shore.

What We’d Do Differently Next Time

  • Choose an early morning ferry to avoid winds
  • Book Golden Star Ferries for more space and smoother sailing
  • Pack smarter and double-check port details the day before

Disposable Hotel Slippers

We love hotel slippers, and some hotels give them and some do not, so we like to be prepared. Plus, the best part is, we can throw them out when we leave the hotel and make our suitcase lighter instead of carrying traditional bedroom slippers that we use at home.

We love these compression cubes! We are notorious over-packers, and these packing cubes help us keep our suitcase organized and underweight!
