We were beyond excited to visit Teide National Park, home to Spain’s highest peak and one of the most surreal landscapes we’ve ever seen. But we quickly learned this otherworldly destination comes with a few surprises — from tricky permits to sudden weather shifts. If you’re planning a visit, here are 13 essential tips that will help you prepare like a pro and truly enjoy your time in Teide National Park.
Must-Know Tips for Teide National Park
1. Book Your Cable Car and Summit Permit in Advance
The cable car gets booked out fast, especially during high season. And if you want to hike to the actual summit, you’ll need a special permit — apply online at least 2 months in advance!
For travelers who want something even lighter, a slim running belt like this one can safely carry your phone and cards without adding bulk.
2. Dress for Every Season
Teide might look sunny, but temps can drop fast — especially near the summit. Wear layers, bring a jacket, and pack sunscreen. We experienced both sunburn and freezing wind on the same day.
3. Get There Early or Late to Avoid Crowds
Tour buses swarm the main viewpoints between 10 AM and 4 PM. Arrive early (sunrise is magical!) or go in the late afternoon for a more peaceful experience and better lighting for photos.
Because you’ll likely be outside for hours visiting landmarks and viewpoints, bringing UV-protective sunglasses like these can help keep your eyes comfortable throughout the day.
4. Don’t Skip the Lower Hiking Trails
Most visitors head straight to the cable car, but the lower trails — like Roques de García or Samara — offer jaw-dropping views without the altitude headache. Many are easy loops suitable for all levels.
5. Use the Official Teide App for Maps & Info
The Parque Nacional del Teide app offers offline trail maps, points of interest, and real-time updates. Super helpful when you lose cell service (which happens often!).

6. Prepare for Altitude Effects
At over 3,700 meters, the air gets thin. Take it slow, hydrate well, and know the signs of altitude sickness — dizziness, headaches, nausea — especially if you’re hiking.
7. Bring Snacks and Plenty of Water
There are no food or water sources inside the park except at the cable car base. Pack high-energy snacks, water, and maybe a thermos if you’re staying late for stargazing.
8. Visit the Visitor Centers First
Stop at El Portillo or Cañada Blanca visitor centers to get trail info, maps, and current park conditions. They also have great educational exhibits about the geology and wildlife.
9. Rent a Car for Maximum Flexibility
Public transport to Teide is limited and time-consuming. A rental car gives you full freedom to explore hidden viewpoints, hike at your pace, and chase that perfect sunset.
10. Try Stargazing — It’s One of the Best Spots in Europe
Teide National Park is a Starlight Reserve, and the night skies here are incredible. Join a guided astronomy tour or bring your own binoculars — you won’t regret it.
11. Be Respectful of the Landscape
Stay on marked trails, don’t take rocks as souvenirs, and be mindful of fragile plants. The volcanic ecosystem is unique and easily damaged.
12. Watch the Weather — It Changes Fast
It can be sunny in Costa Adeje and stormy on Teide. Always check the weather before heading up — fog and wind can cancel cable car rides with little notice.
13. Don’t Rely on Cell Service
Parts of the park have zero signal. Download offline maps, let someone know your plan, and bring a power bank if you’re using your phone for navigation or photos.
Some travelers also carry a mini portable charger like this one in their pocket or bag so they always have backup battery power for maps, photos, and ride apps.
Why Teide National Park Deserves a Spot on Your Bucket List
From its moon-like terrain to jaw-dropping views and starlit skies, Teide National Park is easily one of the most awe-inspiring places in the Canary Islands. And with a little planning (and the right gear), it’s an experience you’ll never forget.
