During our trip, we found so many ways to cut costs without sacrificing the adventure. Whether you’re backpacking or just trying to spend wisely, here are our top tips for experiencing Tenerife on a budget.

1. Skip the Resorts—Go for Local Guesthouses or Airbnb

Resorts in places like Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas can cost a fortune. Instead, we stayed in locally-owned guesthouses and Airbnbs in smaller towns like La Orotava and El Médano. Not only did we save money, but we got a much more authentic experience.

2. Use Public Transport (Yes, It’s Actually Good!)

The TITSA bus network covers most of the island and is surprisingly reliable. A prepaid Ten+ card will get you discounted fares and can be used by multiple people. Buses go to key places like Santa Cruz, Teide, and even popular beaches

3. Enjoy the Free Attractions

Tenerife has some incredible sights that cost absolutely nothing. Think natural swimming pools (charcos), beautiful hiking trails like those in Anaga, and colorful old towns like Garachico or San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Don’t underestimate how much you can see without opening your wallet.

While Teide’s cable car is cool, it’s also pricey. If you’re up for a challenge, there are trails that let you hike Teide on foot—completely free. Even driving through the park and exploring its unique rock formations and viewpoints offers a jaw-dropping experience at no cost.

6. Travel in Shoulder Season

Tenerife is popular year-round, but prices drop in the shoulder seasons (April–June and September–early December). You’ll find cheaper accommodations, smaller crowds, and still-great weather.

Instead of pricey restaurants or touristy shops, stock up on fresh fruits, cheese, and snacks at local farmers’ markets or supermercados like Mercadona. We made our own meals a few nights and it saved us tons.

8. Skip the Souvenirs—Take Photos Instead

We saw lots of overpriced souvenirs, but the best keepsakes were our photos and memories. Snap pics at places like Los Gigantes cliffs, Teide viewpoints, and vibrant local streets. Trust us—you’ll treasure them more than another fridge magnet.

9. Limit Paid Tours—Plan Your Own Day Trips
