We Tried 10 Top Things to Do in Tenerife — Here’s What Was Actually Worth It

enerife is packed with “must-do” activities — but are they all worth the hype? We tried 10 of the island’s most popular attractions and give our honest verdict on what lived up to the buzz (and what didn’t).

We Tried 10 Top Things to Do in Tenerife — Here’s What Was Actually Worth It

Tenerife is full of bucket-list attractions — and we were determined to try as many as possible. But let’s be honest: not every “top thing to do in Tenerife” is a home run. Some were unforgettable… others? Not so much. So if you’re planning your itinerary and wondering what’s truly worth your time (and money), here’s our honest take on 10 popular things to do in Tenerife — from absolute gems to overrated letdowns.

🚠 1. Mount Teide Cable Car — WORTH IT

The cable car ride to the top of Spain’s highest peak is breathtaking. We recommend booking early morning tickets to avoid clouds and crowds. If you can snag a permit to hike the summit, even better! You can book a guided Teide crater hike with the cable car ride.

For solo travelers or couples exploring busy attractions, a smart face-tracking phone tripod like this one can automatically follow your movement and help capture great videos hands-free.

🐬 2. Whale & Dolphin Watching Tour — WORTH IT

We did a small-group eco-friendly tour from Los Gigantes, and seeing pilot whales up close was pure magic. Skip the big party boats and go with a responsible operator for a quieter, more respectful experience. You can reserve a Los Gigantes whale watching sailing charter.

🏰 3. Visiting La Laguna — WORTH IT

Colorful colonial buildings, cobbled streets, and student cafés — La Laguna feels like a mini European city with Canarian soul. Great for a chill afternoon with plenty of history and charm.

🌋 4. Masca Valley Hike — WORTH IT (But Tough!)

The scenery is jaw-dropping, but the hike down through the gorge is steep and slippery. If you’re up for the challenge, it’s a rewarding adventure — just wear good shoes and bring water. You can join a small-group Masca and Garachico tour.

🏖️ 5. Playa de las Américas Beach Day — SKIP IT

If you’re not into crowded beaches and touristy vibes, you won’t miss much by skipping this one. Head to Playa del Camisón or a more scenic northern beach instead.

🖼️ 6. Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA) — WORTH IT

We didn’t expect much, but this museum blew us away. The Guanche mummies and volcanic history displays were super informative and well done — a perfect indoor activity.

🎢 7. Siam Park — WORTH IT (If You Love Waterparks)

Often rated Europe’s best waterpark, and honestly? It’s pretty amazing. Just go early to beat the crowds and consider buying fast passes if you hate lines.

🎭 8. Santa Cruz Carnival (Feb) — WORTH IT

If your trip overlaps with Carnival, go! It’s wild, colorful, and one of the best cultural events we’ve ever experienced. Bring comfy shoes and don’t expect an early night.

🌅 9. Sunset at Los Gigantes Cliffs — WORTH IT

Watching the sun dip behind these massive cliffs was one of our favorite moments on the island. Pair it with dinner at a seaside restaurant for the perfect end to your day.

🛍️ 10. Shopping on the Golden Mile — SKIP IT (Unless You Love Designer Brands)

Unless you’re in the market for luxury shopping, this area felt repetitive and overpriced. We much preferred browsing local markets or artisan shops in smaller towns.

For travelers who want something even lighter, a slim running belt like this one can safely carry your phone and cards without adding bulk.

So, What’s Actually Worth Doing in Tenerife?

While a few experiences didn’t live up to the hype, most of Tenerife’s top attractions absolutely did. Our favorites combined nature, local culture, and unforgettable views — proving there’s so much more to this island than beach resorts.

Our Travel Must-Haves

Universal Charging Adapter

A friend of ours told us about this universal adapter when we were in Greece, and our lives were forever changed. We used to have to carry multiple adapters but now only carry this one as it has an adapter for every country and supports wall and USB chargers!

On The Go Phone Charger

We purchased two of these because we loved it so much. We are constantly using our phones, taking photos and videos while we travel, and never want to run out of charge. These portable chargers keep our phones fully charged at all times!

Disposable Hotel Slippers

We love hotel slippers, and some hotels give them and some do not, so we like to be prepared. Plus, the best part is, we can throw them out when we leave the hotel and make our suitcase lighter instead of carrying traditional bedroom slippers that we use at home.

Travel Packing Bags

We love these compression cubes! We are notorious over-packers, and these packing cubes help us keep our suitcase organized and underweight!
