London City Airport (LCY) might be the smallest of the city’s major airports, but it’s also the most convenient—if you know how to use it. We flew into LCY on our latest trip and were surprised at how quick and efficient it was. Here’s everything you need to know about flying into London City Airport in 2025, including what’s changed, what works well, and what to plan for.

Flying Into London City Airport? Here’s What You Need to Know
1. It’s the Closest Airport to Central London
Located in East London near Canary Wharf, LCY is just 20–30 minutes from the city center by public transport. That beats the longer treks from Heathrow, Gatwick, or Stansted.
Best Transport Options:
- DLR (Docklands Light Railway): Direct from the terminal, connects to the Underground.
- Taxi/Rideshare: Pricey but quick if traffic is light.
- Private transfer: Best for business or groups with lots of luggage.
If you plan to charge multiple devices during long airport layovers or flights, a universal travel adapter like this one can be incredibly useful once you arrive in the UK and need to plug into British outlets.
2. Check-In and Security Are Shockingly Fast
This is LCY’s superpower. With fewer flights and a compact terminal, you can arrive just 90 minutes before departure and still make it comfortably. Security lines are short and staff are efficient.
3. It Mainly Serves Short-Haul Flights
Expect routes to cities in Europe and the UK—Amsterdam, Dublin, Zurich, Edinburgh, etc. It’s popular for business travel but increasingly used by leisure travelers who value time over low fares.
For long-haul flights into London, many travelers pack disinfecting wipes like these in their carry-on to quickly wipe down tray tables, armrests, and seatbelt buckles before settling into their seat.
4. Limited Amenities, But High Quality
You won’t find massive duty-free malls or endless restaurants, but LCY has:
- A few solid cafes and bars (including Pret and Brick Lane Brews)
- Clean restrooms and plenty of seating
- Free fast Wi-Fi and USB charging stations
London is served by several major international airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted, and since travel days can be long, many travelers bring a reusable water bottle like this one to stay hydrated once they pass through airport security.
5. No Jet Bridges, But a Quick Walk
At LCY, you’ll often walk directly onto the tarmac to board your plane. It feels old-school but is part of what makes the airport so efficient—no long corridors or gate changes.
Since airports are one of the easiest places to misplace important items, many travelers keep their passport and cash in a hidden RFID-blocking money belt like this one for extra security while moving through security lines and boarding gates.
6. It’s Perfect for Carry-On Only Travel
Since it’s a compact airport with fast security and boarding, LCY is ideal if you’re traveling light. You’ll be in and out faster than anywhere else in London.
7. Downsides? Limited Airlines and Destinations
LCY doesn’t serve long-haul or many budget routes. You won’t find Ryanair or Wizz Air here. And prices are generally higher due to its premium location and clientele.
Quick Tips for Flying Into LCY:
- Arrive 90 minutes before your flight.
- Sit on the left side of the plane for skyline views when landing.
- Use contactless payment for easy access to the DLR.
- Grab a coffee before heading out—there’s not much after security.
