The No-Fluff Guide to the Best Santorini Beaches

Not all Santorini beaches are created equal—here’s our honest guide to the best (and most overrated) ones to help you plan smarter.

The No-Fluff Guide to the Best Santorini Beaches

When we landed in Santorini, we imagined pristine white sands and turquoise water—but the reality? Santorini beaches are wildly unique… and not always what you’d expect. If you’re looking for the best Santorini beaches for swimming, relaxing, or photo ops, this no-fluff guide is exactly what you need.

🏖️ Kamari Beach: The Best for Classic Beach Days

This long stretch of black volcanic sand is Santorini’s most “resort-style” beach. With tons of sunbeds, beach bars, and restaurants, Kamari is lively but not chaotic.
Why it’s worth it: Great for families, easy access, soft sand (for Santorini), and clear water.
Downside: Can get busy in high season.

🪨 Red Beach: Most Photogenic—But Be Cautious

Red Beach gets all the Instagram love for its dramatic cliffs and rust-colored sand. But it’s small, rocky, and prone to landslides, with limited space to lay out.
Why it’s famous: That stunning red backdrop against bright teal water.
Why to skip: The path down is steep and slippery; not ideal for kids or anyone with mobility concerns.
Pro tip: Visit just for photos from the viewpoint—then head to nearby Akrotiri Beach to swim.

🌊 Perissa Beach: Chill Vibes Without the Crowds

Located just down from Kamari (but separated by a massive rock cliff), Perissa offers a similar black-sand vibe with a slightly more relaxed atmosphere.
Why we loved it: Great mix of beach clubs and quiet areas. Prices are a bit lower than Kamari.
Bonus: You can hike up to Ancient Thira from here if you’re feeling adventurous.

💣 Monolithos Beach: Most Overlooked

Looking for soft sand and fewer tourists? Monolithos is a hidden gem near the airport that locals prefer. It’s more natural, less flashy, and great for swimming.
Why it stands out: Family-friendly, shallow waters, and softest sand on the island.
Downside: Fewer facilities and no dramatic cliffs—come prepared.

📸 Vlychada Beach: For a Wild, Lunar Feel

Often called the “moon beach,” Vlychada has crazy white volcanic cliffs and a peaceful, otherworldly vibe.
Best for: Uncrowded lounging, striking photo ops, and a break from the caldera crowds.
Tip: There’s a small beach bar nearby, but bring your own snacks and umbrella just in case.

🚫 Beaches to Skip (Unless You Have a Specific Reason)

  • White Beach: Only accessible by boat, often overcrowded, and not as “white” as you’d think.
  • Columbo Beach: Remote, windy, and hard to reach. Good for naturists, but not much else.
  • Ammoudi Bay: Beautiful but more for dining than beaching—no real sand, just rocky swims.

🏝️ So, Which Santorini Beaches Are Actually Worth It?

If you want a mix of comfort and scenery: Kamari or Perissa
For dramatic photos: Red Beach (viewpoint only) or Vlychada
For local vibes: Monolithos
Skip the gimmicky ones and go where you’ll enjoy both the view and the vibe.

Disposable Hotel Slippers

We love hotel slippers, and some hotels give them and some do not, so we like to be prepared. Plus, the best part is, we can throw them out when we leave the hotel and make our suitcase lighter instead of carrying traditional bedroom slippers that we use at home.
