Tangier Airport: 7 Things No One Tells You

Tangier Airport may surprise you. From missing signs to cash-only taxis, here are 7 things no one tells you—but should—before you land in Tangier.

Tangier Airport: 7 Things No One Tells You

We landed in Tangier thinking Tangier Airport would be just a quick pit stop on our Moroccan adventure. Spoiler: it was anything but ordinary. While small and efficient in some ways, Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport (TNG) has some quirky surprises that can catch even seasoned travelers off guard.

Here are 7 things no one tells you about Tangier Airport—but absolutely should.

1. It’s Small… But Still Easy to Get Lost

Tangier Airport may be tiny by international standards, but that doesn’t mean it’s intuitive.

  • Poor signage: Expect minimal English and lots of wandering.
  • Departures are oddly tucked away. Even airport staff sometimes give vague directions.

Quick Tip:
Ask early and often. Don’t be shy about confirming where to go—especially at security or passport control.

2. Customs Can Be Incredibly Slow or Shockingly Fast

There’s no in-between here. You might breeze through in 10 minutes or wait over an hour depending on the flight schedule.

  • Passport control takes priority. Be ready for questions—even on short visits.
  • You’ll need a landing card. If you don’t get one on the plane, grab one before joining the line.

Pro Tip:
Fill out your card before getting in line—it can save you from starting over.

3. Cash Is King—Especially for Taxis

There are no rideshare apps in Tangier, and airport taxis only take Moroccan Dirhams (MAD). No cards, no exceptions.

  • ATM available post-customs
  • Exchange rates better in town, so withdraw only what you need

Don’t forget:
Taxi fares to the city center range from 150–200 MAD—always agree on the price first

4. You’ll Probably Have to Haggle… at the Airport

We weren’t expecting to negotiate inside an airport, but here we are.

  • “Taxi coordinators” often quote inflated prices.
  • Even private drivers may add on “baggage fees.”

Insider Tip:
Skip the indoor offers. Walk outside to the official taxi stand and ask the driver directly for the price.

5. The Wi-Fi Works Best Where You Least Expect It

We found the strongest signal not in the café or lounges—but right by baggage claim.

  • Open network; no SIM needed
  • Often drops as soon as you leave arrivals

Wi-Fi Hack:
Download your map and directions before heading out. Once you step outside, you may lose signal fast.

6. There Are Almost No Food Options

If you’re hoping for a pre-flight meal, eat before you arrive.

  • One tiny café in departures, usually with limited food
  • No vending machines or water refill stations

What to Pack:
Snacks, reusable water bottle (empty for security), and tissues for the bathrooms—they’re often not stocked.

7. Departing Can Be Just as Confusing as Arriving

Leaving Tangier is its own kind of adventure.

  • Security opens late: You may be waiting around in a small, crowded check-in hall.
  • Gate changes are not always announced. Keep an eye on the board.

Heads up:
Lines can build fast. Arrive 2 hours early—even for short-haul flights.
