Switzerland is one of those dream destinations that feels almost too perfect. But if it’s your first time visiting, you might have questions: Do you need Swiss Francs? Is public transport really that easy? How much should you budget? We asked all the same things before our first trip. This guide has everything you need to know before traveling to Switzerland so you can explore like a pro.

Explore Switzerland With US!

Currency: Swiss Francs (CHF)

Switzerland doesn’t use the Euro. You’ll need Swiss Francs (CHF) for cash purchases, although credit and debit cards are widely accepted. ATMs are easy to find, and many places accept contactless payment.

Tip: Always pay in CHF (not your home currency) to avoid bad conversion rates.

Transportation: Trains, Trams & Travel Passes

Switzerland’s transport system is world-class. Trains, trams, boats, and buses are punctual, clean, and easy to navigate.

  • Use the Swiss Travel Pass for unlimited travel and free entry to 500+ museums.
  • The SBB app is your best friend for schedules and tickets.
  • Trams are great for getting around cities like Zurich, Basel, and Geneva.

Language: More Than One

Switzerland has four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh.

  • Zurich, Lucerne, and Bern: mostly Swiss German
  • Geneva and Lausanne: mostly French
  • Lugano: Italian

Don’t worry – most people speak English, especially in tourist areas.

Budget: What to Expect

Switzerland is expensive, but worth it.

  • Simple meal: CHF 15-25
  • Mid-range hotel: CHF 150-250
  • Train travel: CHF 30-70 per route (or use a pass!)

Ways to Save:

  • Use refillable water bottles (tap water is drinkable)
  • Buy groceries at Coop or Migros
  • Look into picnic lunches or street food

Weather: Know Before You Go

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Ski season, cold and snowy
  • Spring (Mar–May): Mild, with blooming flowers and fewer crowds
  • Summer (Jun–Aug): Warm, perfect for hiking and lake swims
  • Fall (Sep–Nov): Crisp air, golden leaves, and wine harvests

Always pack layers—mountain weather can change quickly.

Safety: One of the Safest Countries

Switzerland ranks among the safest countries in the world. Public transport is reliable and safe even at night. Still, always watch your belongings in crowded areas like train stations.

What Else to Know

  • Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory (round up or leave 5-10%)
  • Sunday closures: Most shops close on Sundays
  • Power plugs: Type J (bring a European adapter if needed)
  • Drinking fountains: Clean, cold, and everywhere

Our Travel Must-Haves

Universal Charging Adapter

A friend of ours told us about this universal adapter when we were in Greece, and our lives were forever changed. We used to have to carry multiple adapters but now only carry this one as it has an adapter for every country and supports wall and USB chargers!

On The Go Phone Charger

We purchased two of these because we loved it so much. We are constantly using our phones, taking photos and videos while we travel, and never want to run out of charge. These portable chargers keep our phones fully charged at all times!

Disposable Hotel Slippers

We love hotel slippers, and some hotels give them and some do not, so we like to be prepared. Plus, the best part is, we can throw them out when we leave the hotel and make our suitcase lighter instead of carrying traditional bedroom slippers that we use at home.

Travel Packing Bags

We love these compression cubes! We are notorious over-packers, and these packing cubes help us keep our suitcase organized and underweight!
