First Time Dubai Guide Rule Book: We Learned These Dubai Do’s and Don’ts the Hard Way—So You Don’t Have To

Our first trip to Dubai came with some surprises. Here are the do’s and don’ts we learned from real experiences—from fashion mishaps to cultural lessons.

First Time Dubai Guide Rule Book: We Learned These Dubai Do’s and Don’ts the Hard Way—So You Don’t Have To

Dubai blew us away with its architecture, luxury, and culture—but also threw us a few curveballs we didn’t expect. From fashion faux pas to public etiquette slip-ups, we learned some of Dubai’s do’s and don’ts the awkward way. Here’s what went wrong, what we wish we knew earlier, and how you can get it right the first time.

That Time We Dressed Too Casually for the Mall

We strolled into a glitzy Dubai mall wearing shorts and tank tops—only to get awkward stares (and a polite reminder from security). Now we always pack a lightweight scarf and opt for modest attire in public spaces.

Learning to Say No to PDA

Even hand-holding felt uncomfortable in certain places. While we saw couples doing it discreetly, we quickly learned that public affection just isn’t the norm—and can even get you fined.

We Almost Took Photos in the Wrong Place

Snapping a shot of a mosque from the outside seemed harmless until we were gently told to ask for permission. Always double-check before photographing people, government buildings, or religious sites.

Our First Ramadan Visit: A Crash Course in Respect

We visited during Ramadan and didn’t realize how serious the rules were about eating in public. Thankfully, a friendly shopkeeper explained it before we made a big mistake. Since then, we always research cultural holidays.

The Night We Misjudged Alcohol Rules

After a few drinks at a licensed lounge, we started walking back to our hotel laughing and talking loudly. A local quietly warned us about public intoxication laws—it was a sobering moment.

Realizing the Left Hand Rule in the Middle of a Meal

A kind local pointed out we were eating with our left hands—a no-no in traditional settings. We appreciated the correction and learned to be more mindful.

Why We Now Research Laws Before We Fly

Some medications in our carry-on were flagged at the airport. Luckily, we had prescriptions, but it was a wake-up call to always check UAE entry rules before arriving.

What We Learned: Respect Is Key in Dubai

Dubai is incredibly welcoming, but it does expect tourists to be culturally aware. These small moments shaped our understanding and helped us connect with the city in a deeper, more respectful way.

Disposable Hotel Slippers

We love hotel slippers, and some hotels give them and some do not, so we like to be prepared. Plus, the best part is, we can throw them out when we leave the hotel and make our suitcase lighter instead of carrying traditional bedroom slippers that we use at home.
