We Skipped the Big Bus Tour in Dubai—Here’s How We Sightsee Instead

Big bus tours in Dubai? We passed—and planned our own adventure instead. Here’s our DIY sightseeing route using boats, bikes, Metro, and a few smart apps.

We Skipped the Big Bus Tour in Dubai—Here’s How We Sightsee Instead

Why We Said No to the Big Bus

We love a good overview tour—but in Dubai, the big red hop-on-hop-off buses felt… limiting. They were slow in traffic, packed in the afternoon, and missed some of the most charming corners of the city. So we skipped it.

Instead, we built our own self-guided sightseeing route—and honestly, it was better. Cheaper, more flexible, and way more fun. Here’s exactly how we did it.

1. 🚇 The Dubai Metro: Fast, Clean & Scenic

Why We Used It:
The Metro links nearly all major sights—and it’s air-conditioned, affordable, and runs every few minutes.

Key Stops We Used:

  • Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall: For the tower, fountains, and mall
  • Al Fahidi: For the historical district and museums
  • Gold Souq: For the traditional markets
  • Mall of the Emirates: For Ski Dubai and upscale shopping

Pro Tip: Buy a Silver Nol Card—it’s rechargeable and works on Metro, trams, and buses.

2. 🛶 The Abra: Old Dubai’s Water Taxi

Why We Loved It:
It’s just 1 AED and takes you across Dubai Creek—still the most authentic ride in the city.

Where to Board:
From Bur Dubai side to Deira side (or vice versa)

What to Pair It With:
Explore Spice Souk, Gold Souk, and grab local snacks after crossing the creek.

3. 🚲 Careem Bike: A Surprising Win

Why We Tried It:
We saw bright green bike stations all over the Marina and decided to give it a go.

Where We Rode:

  • Dubai Marina Walk: Scenic and flat
  • JBR to Bluewaters Island: Gorgeous overwater path

Tips:

  • Download the Careem Bike app in advance
  • Helmet not required but recommended

4. 🛥️ Self-Guided Marina Cruise

Skip: The big commercial boat tours
Do Instead: Book a small-group yacht brunch or 30-minute water taxi ride via Xclusive Yachts or the RTA ferry.

Bonus: Sunset views of the skyline from the water—no crowds, no tourist megaphones.

5. 📱 The Apps That Made It All Easier

  • RTA Dubai: Public transport routes and fare calculator
  • Google Maps: Most walking paths and metro stops are mapped
  • Talabat: Great for food delivery to your hotel or picnic spot
  • Dubai Calendar: Check free events, pop-ups, and cultural happenings

6. 🏙️ What We Covered in Just 2 Days

Without a tour bus, we still saw:

  • Burj Khalifa & Dubai Mall
  • Dubai Fountain show at night
  • Al Fahidi + Dubai Museum
  • Abra ride & Deira souks
  • Jumeirah Mosque (guided cultural tour)
  • Dubai Marina + Bluewaters Island
  • The View at the Palm

And best of all? We did it at our own pace—no waiting for buses or rushing back to a stop.

Final Thoughts: Dubai Is Even Better DIY

Tour buses have their place, but in Dubai, your own two feet (and a Nol card) can take you so much further. With a little prep and the right transit combo, you’ll see more, spend less, and stumble on experiences the big tours don’t even touch.

A friend of ours told us about this universal adapter when we were in Greece, and our lives were forever changed. We used to have to carry multiple adapters but now only carry this one as it has an adapter for every country and supports wall and USB chargers!

We purchased two of these because we loved it so much. We are constantly using our phones, taking photos and videos while we travel, and never want to run out of charge. These portable chargers keep our phones fully charged at all times!

Disposable Hotel Slippers

We love hotel slippers, and some hotels give them and some do not, so we like to be prepared. Plus, the best part is, we can throw them out when we leave the hotel and make our suitcase lighter instead of carrying traditional bedroom slippers that we use at home.

Travel Packing Bags

We love these compression cubes! We are notorious over-packers, and these packing cubes help us keep our suitcase organized and underweight!
