When we landed in Dubai, we were blown away by the skyline, the malls, and the jaw-dropping desert experiences. But the biggest surprise? How safe we felt.

We’ve been to major cities around the world, and honestly, Dubai felt safer than New York, London, or even Athens—in ways we didn’t expect. From spotless streets to respectful strangers, here’s why Dubai stands out for traveler safety.

1. Clean, Camera-Covered, and Calm

Dubai’s streets are spotless, with almost no graffiti or trash. You’ll also see very little loitering or aggressive panhandling. Why?

• Surveillance is everywhere (CCTV is a norm, not a novelty)
• There’s a strong cultural emphasis on order and respect
• Law enforcement is present—but discreet and approachable

We walked around at 11 PM near Dubai Marina and felt more at ease than we have in Times Square at 9 PM.

2. Public Transport = Peace of Mind

Dubai’s Metro is modern, air-conditioned, and safe for everyone. We used it daily and noticed:

• Women-only cars for added comfort
• No rowdiness, noise, or eating allowed

Compared to the NYC subway or London’s Tube during rush hour, Dubai’s Metro felt calm, secure, and clean. 3. Solo Female Travel? 100% Doable

We’ve both traveled solo, and Dubai was one of the few cities where we didn’t feel the need to “stay alert” every second. There was no catcalling, staring, or sketchy interactions. Petty theft, scams, and violent crime are rare in Dubai. Most shops leave merchandise out, cafes are fine with unattended laptops, and locals often leave their car running at the curb.

What’s different from NYC or LA?

• No wallet-clutching on busy streets
• No scams at major tourist spots
• No anxiety about after-dark neighborhoods

5. Cultural Respect Creates Social Harmony

Dubai’s strict-but-fair laws around public behavior create an environment where respect is mutual. You’ll rarely see public fights, shouting, or rowdy nightlife outside of clubs.

Even in areas like Deira or Bur Dubai (with high foot traffic), it never felt chaotic or unsafe.

6. What We Still Watched Out For

Dubai is incredibly safe, but not lawless. Here’s what we were mindful of:

• Dressing modestly outside hotel/resort zones. • Avoiding PDA in public
• No drunk walking after nightlife outings (Uber back to the hotel!)
