Masca Village had been on our Tenerife wishlist from the start. With its dramatic mountain backdrop and postcard-perfect charm, it seemed like a no-brainer. But after visiting, we realized Masca comes with both magic and a few surprises. So if you’re wondering, “Is Masca worth it?” — here are 7 things we wish we knew before we went, to help you decide and plan better.
1. The Drive to Masca Is Stunning — and Terrifying
The road to Masca is narrow, winding, and filled with sharp turns that hug the cliffs. If you’re not comfortable with mountain driving, prepare for a challenge. That said, the views are absolutely jaw-dropping — we pulled over multiple times to take photos.
2. Parking Is Extremely Limited
Masca is tiny, and so are its parking lots. If you arrive between 10 AM and 3 PM, you might find yourself circling endlessly or walking up steep hills from further down. Arrive early or late in the day for the best chance of snagging a spot.
3. It’s Not Just About the View — the Village Is Worth Exploring
Most people snap a quick photo and move on, but Masca’s winding alleys, small museums, and artisan shops deserve a bit of your time. Stop for local cactus liqueur, browse handmade crafts, and chat with friendly residents who still call this remote valley home.

4. The Food is Surprisingly Good (and Scenic)
We didn’t expect much from such a small place, but the cafés in Masca serve up delicious Canarian dishes. Restaurante El Guanche offers a terrace with incredible views and tasty dishes like papas arrugadas and grilled goat cheese.
5. The Masca Gorge Hike Is Closed Without a Booking
The famous Masca Gorge hike — a challenging trek through the ravine to the sea — requires a permit and must be booked in advance through the official site. Don’t show up expecting to hike without prior planning, and be aware that only a limited number of hikers are allowed each day.
6. You Don’t Need to Hike to Enjoy Masca
Even if you’re not hiking, Masca is worth visiting just for the scenic drive, panoramic views, and village charm. Plan to spend 1–2 hours enjoying the area, especially in the cooler morning or golden late afternoon light.
7. It’s More Touristy Than We Expected — But Still Magical
Yes, it’s popular. Yes, you’ll likely share the view with selfie sticks and bus groups. But even with the crowds, the landscape is surreal, the village peaceful, and the entire experience incredibly photogenic. Just manage your expectations and take it slow.
So, Is Masca Village Worth Visiting?
Absolutely — as long as you’re prepared. The scenery alone makes Masca a must-see, but a little planning can help you avoid stress and enjoy the magic that makes this one of Tenerife’s most iconic spots.
