Is Athens Worth Visiting? Here’s What Surprised Us

Is Athens worth visiting? Here’s what shocked us (in good and bad ways) and what you should know before booking your trip to Greece’s capital.

Is Athens Worth Visiting? Here’s What Surprised Us

We’d heard mixed reviews about Athens—some called it chaotic and dirty, others raved about the history and vibe. So when we finally visited, we weren’t sure what to expect. The result? A few surprises (both good and bad) that helped us decide: is Athens worth visiting? Here’s our honest take.

What Surprised Us—in the Best Way

  • The Acropolis Is Even More Impressive in Person – Photos don’t do it justice. The scale, history, and views blew us away. If you enjoy filming your travel experiences, a tiny wearable camera like this one is a great way to capture hands-free POV footage while walking through iconic locations.
  • Modern Athens Is Cool, Too – Rooftop bars, street art, hip cafes—it’s not just ruins.
  • Walkability and Public Transit – We walked almost everywhere and used the metro easily. It’s one of Europe’s better transit systems.
  • Tavernas and Cafes Are Everywhere – It’s easy to eat well without spending much. The street food alone is worth the trip.

If you’re exploring crowded attractions like the Acropolis, some travelers like carrying a hidden money belt like this one to keep their passport, credit cards, and cash secure. To make the most of the ancient citadel without waiting in long queues, you can reserve a skip-the-line guided Acropolis tour.

What We Didn’t Love (and How to Deal)

  • It’s Loud and Busy – Traffic and honking are constant—especially around Syntagma and Monastiraki.
  • Tip: Stay in quieter neighborhoods like Koukaki or Mets.
  • Pickpockets Are a Real Thing – Especially on public transport and near major sights.
  • Not All Areas Are Pretty – Athens is gritty in places. If you’re expecting postcard-perfect streets, you might be disappointed.

Who Will Love Athens?

  • History lovers: The ruins are world-class.
  • Foodies: From street eats to modern Greek cuisine, it’s delicious. Sampling local cuisine is always exciting, but maintaining good oral hygiene while traveling is just as important, which is why many travelers pack a portable water flosser like this one.
  • Urban explorers: There’s so much personality packed into the neighborhoods.
  • Budget travelers: It’s cheaper than many European capitals.

Who Might Not?

  • Travelers who dislike big cities.
  • Those wanting pristine, quiet getaways—head to the islands instead.

Learning about a place is interesting, but visiting it yourself brings it to life. Thinking about visiting Greece soon? Keep this in mind: safety is always important when traveling, and some travelers keep a small personal safety alarm like this one attached to their bag for extra peace of mind.

Is Athens Worth Visiting? Yes—If You Know What to Expect

Athens isn’t always pretty, but it’s real, rich with history, and unexpectedly fun. If you’re open to a little grit with your grandeur, Athens just might steal your heart.

Our Travel Must-Haves

Universal Charging Adapter

A friend of ours told us about this universal adapter when we were in Greece, and our lives were forever changed. We used to have to carry multiple adapters but now only carry this one as it has an adapter for every country and supports wall and USB chargers!

On The Go Phone Charger

We purchased two of these because we loved it so much. We are constantly using our phones, taking photos and videos while we travel, and never want to run out of charge. These portable chargers keep our phones fully charged at all times!

Disposable Hotel Slippers

We love hotel slippers, and some hotels give them and some do not, so we like to be prepared. Plus, the best part is, we can throw them out when we leave the hotel and make our suitcase lighter instead of carrying traditional bedroom slippers that we use at home.

Travel Packing Bags

We love these compression cubes! We are notorious over-packers, and these packing cubes help us keep our suitcase organized and underweight!
