Armed with Google Maps, a marked riad address, and plenty of confidence, we stepped into the maze of alleys that make up the Marrakech medina. As soon as we looked even slightly confused, men appeared offering to “help” us find our way.

Lesson learned: If you need help, ask a shopkeeper or café owner, not someone who approaches you on the street.

The Unexpected Discoveries

Getting lost wasn’t all bad. Along the way, we stumbled upon:

• A tiny courtyard where children played soccer.
• A leather workshop where artisans were hand-tooling bags.
• A quiet riad door that opened into one of the most beautiful gardens we’d seen.

How We Finally Found Our Riad

After circling the same square twice, we ducked into a café, ordered mint tea, and showed the waiter our riad’s address. He smiled, pointed us in the right direction, and even walked us part of the way. Within five minutes, we were at our door—safe, sound, and a little wiser.
