During our Morocco trip, we had the chance to explore both the Ouarzazate desert and Merzouga. Each has its own vibe, landscape, and travel style — but they’re wildly different. Location & Accessibility: Ouarzazate Desert vs Merzouga

Ouarzazate Desert

• Closer to Marrakech: Just a 4–5 hour drive, often via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass.
• Gateway to film sets and the Sahara: Ouarzazate is a major stop on Morocco desert tours.
• Paved roads and tourist infrastructure: It’s easier to find guided tours and comfortable transport.

Merzouga

• Much farther east: About 9–10 hours from Marrakech or 7 from Fes.
• Remote but iconic: You’ll reach the famous Erg Chebbi dunes — tall, golden, and cinematic.
• Longer journey, fewer towns nearby: Ideal for those who don’t mind the trek.

Quick Tip: If you’re short on time, the Ouarzazate desert wins. But if you want the “classic Sahara experience,” Merzouga is worth the haul.

Ouarzazate Desert
