How to Travel With a Family Member Without Losing Your Mind (or Theirs!)

Traveling with someone, no matter how much you love them, is the ultimate relationship test. You’re sharing tight spaces, making endless decisions together, and probably running on less sleep than you’d like. Let’s talk about how to travel with a family member so you return from the trip with your relationship intact!

Let’s be honest—traveling with someone for days (or weeks) on end can test even the strongest of relationships. From jet lag-fueled meltdowns to “You packed WHAT?!” moments, it’s not always sunshine and scenic selfies. As a mother-daughter duo who’s traveled everywhere from Thailand’s bustling streets to the calm canals of Zurich, we’ve had our fair share of “I need space!” moments. But guess what? We’ve survived every trip—and laughed (mostly) through it all. Here are our best tips for traveling with a family member (without plotting their disappearance mid-flight).

1. Set Expectations Before You Board The Plane

Before you even pack your bags, talk about what you both want from the trip. Are you there to relax? Explore non-stop? Eat your body weight in pasta?

Our Experience:

When we visited Thailand, one of us wanted to chill by the beach (hi, Mom!), while the other was ready to climb every temple in sight (guilty!). We learned to balance both by planning “me time” and shared adventures. A little clarity up front can save you from mid-trip frustrations.

Pro Tip: Discuss your must-dos and your “I-don’t-care” moments before you leave. That way, you’re both on the same page—and nobody’s dragging their feet through a museum they never wanted to visit.

2. Build In Alone Time (Yes, Even on Vacation!)

You don’t need to spend every second together. In fact, having a little space can make your time together even better.

Our Experience:

On our trip to London, we gave each other solo mornings—one of us explored local coffee shops while the other wandered through art galleries. By the afternoon, we were refreshed and excited to share stories over lunch.

Pro Tip: Schedule at least one hour of solo time each day. Whether it’s a quiet walk, a yoga class, or reading by the pool, a little break can recharge your patience.

3. Communicate Like You Really Mean It

Travel can bring out stress in weird ways. The best way to handle it? Talk it out. Don’t let small annoyances fester  until you’re snapping over the last croissant at breakfast .

Our Experience:

There was that one time in Africa when an oversized piece of luggage caused a mini meltdown. We learned that instead of stewing in silence, saying, “I just need a minute to cool off” worked wonders.

Pro Tip: Create a “safe word” for when tensions rise—something silly like “pineapple” can break the tension and remind you both that you’re on this adventure together.

4. Be Flexible—Travel Rarely Goes As Planned

Missed flights, bad weather, weird food—something will definitely go wrong. The secret? Go with the flow (or at least try to).

Our Experience:

In Greece, a ferry delay turned into an unexpected adventure. Instead of stressing, we found a cute little café, sipped on local wine, and laughed about our luck. Sometimes, the best moments are the ones you didn’t plan.

Pro Tip: Always have a backup activity or two in your back pocket—think a fun card game, a list of nearby cafés, or a local market to explore.

5. Don’t Sweat Any of The Small Stuff (Seriously)

They forgot the adapter again? Didn’t book the dinner reservation? Take a deep breath—it’s rarely worth the fight.

Our Experience:

There was a… heated debate over lost hotel slippers in Asia. Looking back, it was hilarious that we got so worked up over something so minor. Sometimes, letting go of the little things is the best travel hack.

Pro Tip: If it won’t matter tomorrow, it’s probably not worth arguing over today. Laugh it off, move on, and focus on making good memories.

6. Share the Load— Traveling Together is a Team Effort

No one wants to feel like the trip’s unpaid travel agent. Split the responsibilities—one books transportation, the other handles accommodations. Everyone wins.

Our Experience:

One of us (Mom) is the queen of finding the perfect hotel, while the other (me) handles the transportation to actually get there. It makes the planning feel more balanced and keeps either of us from feeling overwhelmed.

Pro Tip: Play to each other’s strengths. Let the planner plan, the foodie find the eats, and the photographer snap those Insta-worthy shots.

Embrace The Adventure (Flaws and All!)

Traveling with someone you love isn’t always easy—but it’s always worth it. You’ll share laughs, conquer challenges, and create memories that last a lifetime (even if they come with a few “Are you serious right now?” moments).

From mother-daughter meltdowns to unforgettable sunsets, every trip teaches us something new about each other—and ourselves. So pack your patience, embrace the chaos, and remember: the best stories come from the moments that didn’t go as planned.

Happy travels—without the drama! 🌍💖

Our Travel Must-Haves

Universal Charging Adapter

A friend of ours told us about this universal adapter when we were in Greece, and our lives were forever changed. We used to have to carry multiple adapters but now only carry this one as it has an adapter for every country and supports wall and USB chargers!

On The Go Phone Charger

We purchased two of these because we loved it so much. We are constantly using our phones, taking photos and videos while we travel, and never want to run out of charge. These portable chargers keep our phones fully charged at all times!

Disposable Hotel Slippers

We love hotel slippers, and some hotels give them and some do not, so we like to be prepared. Plus, the best part is, we can throw them out when we leave the hotel and make our suitcase lighter instead of carrying traditional bedroom slippers that we use at home.

Travel Packing Bags

We love these compression cubes! We are notorious over-packers, and these packing cubes help us keep our suitcase organized and underweight!
