Dubai Airport Survival Guide: What to Know Before You Land at DXB

Big, Busy, and Surprisingly Beautiful—Welcome to DXB

We’ve flown through a lot of airports, but Dubai International Airport (DXB) is in a league of its own. It’s one of the busiest hubs in the world—and easily one of the most dazzling. But with three massive terminals, fast-paced connections, and cultural nuances to keep in mind, it’s not a place you want to just “wing it.”

Get To Know The Traveling Taylors!

Here’s everything you need to know to survive (and even enjoy) your time at Dubai Airport—whether you’re landing, connecting, or heading home.

Terminal Breakdown: Know Where You’re Going

  • Terminal 1: Serves most international airlines. Home to a huge Duty-Free area and direct access to the Metro.
  • Terminal 2: Smaller, mostly regional and low-cost carriers.
  • Terminal 3: Dedicated to Emirates and some flydubai flights. It’s the largest and most luxurious terminal.

Quick Tip: Check your terminal in advance—T1 and T3 are not walkable between flights, and changing terminals can take 30+ minutes via shuttle.

Immigration & Customs: Be Ready to Move Fast

Dubai’s immigration is efficient but strict. Have these ready:

  • Passport with at least 6 months validity
  • Valid visa or pre-approved eVisa (if required)
  • No photos, videos, or phone use in immigration areas

Pro Tip: If you’re traveling as a family, stay together at the counter—group processing is common.

Getting Around DXB: It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint

  • Walking times are long—especially in T3. Use the moving walkways and allow plenty of time between gates.
  • Shuttles between terminals run every 20–30 minutes and can be crowded.
  • Airport maps & info desks are everywhere—don’t be shy about asking for help.

Lounges, Showers & Sleep Zones: Recharge Smart

  • Showers: Available in select lounges or inside the G-Force Gym in Terminal 3.
  • Lounges: Emirates Lounge (T3) is incredible, but Priority Pass lounges like Marhaba are solid options.
  • Sleep Pods: SnoozeCube and Sleep ’n Fly are pay-per-hour sleeping pods inside T1 and T3.

Pro Tip: Book your pod in advance if you have a long layover—spots fill up quickly during peak hours.

Food & Shopping: Don’t Miss These Spots

  • Best Food: Try The Kitchen by Wolfgang Puck (T1), Treehouse Juicery (T3), or Tranzeet DXB for local fusion.
  • Best Souvenirs: Pick up saffron, dates, and local chocolate at Dubai Duty Free.
  • Open 24/7: Most restaurants and shops stay open all night.

Free Wi-Fi & Charging: Yes, and Yes

  • Free, fast Wi-Fi throughout all terminals.
  • Plenty of charging stations—look near gates and café seating areas.

Quick Hack: Download the DXB Airport app for gate alerts, food ordering, and maps.

Metro & Transport: Getting Into the City

  • Dubai Metro connects directly to T1 and T3 (red line).
  • Taxis are well-organized and metered—cash or card accepted.
  • Rideshare: Careem and Uber operate at DXB, but taxis are often faster and cheaper.

Note: There’s no Metro service between midnight and 5am, so plan accordingly.

Cultural Etiquette at the Airport

  • Dress modestly—especially if you’re arriving or departing.
  • No public displays of affection.
  • Avoid chewing gum, eating, or drinking during Ramadan daylight hours (if traveling during the holy month).

Final Take: Conquer Dubai Airport Like a Pro

Dubai Airport is massive but manageable—if you know how to navigate it. With a little planning and these insider tips, your arrival or layover at DXB can be smooth, even enjoyable. Whether you’re heading into the city or off to another destination, you’ll start your trip with confidence.

Disposable Hotel Slippers

We love hotel slippers, and some hotels give them and some do not, so we like to be prepared. Plus, the best part is, we can throw them out when we leave the hotel and make our suitcase lighter instead of carrying traditional bedroom slippers that we use at home.
