We Got Lost in the Marrakech Medina—Here’s What Happened

The Marrakech medina is a maze where getting lost is inevitable. Here’s our honest story of wandering its alleys—what went wrong, what went right, and what you should know.

We Got Lost in the Marrakech Medina—Here’s What Happened

If you’ve read anything about Marrakech, you’ve probably heard one warning: “You will get lost in the medina.” We thought we’d be fine. Armed with Google Maps, a marked riad address, and plenty of confidence, we stepped into the maze of alleys that make up the Marrakech medina. Within minutes, we realized—it’s not a question of if you’ll get lost, but when. Here’s what happened to us, and what you should know before diving in.

The First Wrong Turn

The medina is centuries old, designed long before street signs or city planning. Alleys twist and turn, often narrowing until only one person can pass at a time. Google Maps? Forget it. The little blue dot jumped from street to street while we second-guessed every turn.

Before long, we were in a completely different quarter of the medina than we intended—dodging motorbikes, donkey carts, and shopkeepers calling out their wares.

The “Helpful” Locals

As soon as we looked even slightly confused, men appeared offering to “help” us find our way.

  • One insisted a street was closed (it wasn’t).
  • Another walked alongside us, then demanded money after giving directions.
  • Some were genuinely kind, but it’s hard to tell in the moment.

Lesson learned: If you need help, ask a shopkeeper or café owner, not someone who approaches you on the street.

The Unexpected Discoveries

Getting lost wasn’t all bad. Along the way, we stumbled upon:

  • A tiny courtyard where children played soccer.
  • A leather workshop where artisans were hand-tooling bags.
  • A quiet riad door that opened into one of the most beautiful gardens we’d seen.

These unplanned finds were some of our favorite Marrakech medina highlights.

How We Finally Found Our Riad

After circling the same square twice, we ducked into a café, ordered mint tea, and showed the waiter our riad’s address. He smiled, pointed us in the right direction, and even walked us part of the way. Within five minutes, we were at our door—safe, sound, and a little wiser.

Tips for Getting Lost in the Marrakech Medina (Without Stressing Out)

  1. Mark your riad on a map before you leave—don’t rely on memory.
  2. Save your riad’s phone number—many will send someone to fetch you.
  3. Don’t panic. Wandering is part of the experience.
  4. Avoid following strangers. If you need help, ask inside a shop or café.
  5. Embrace it. The medina is designed to be confusing—it’s what makes it fascinating.

Getting Lost in the Medina

Yes, we got lost in the Marrakech medina. Yes, it was frustrating at times. But it was also magical. The chaos, the surprises, and even the detours are what make the medina unforgettable. So if you find yourself turned around (and you will), take a breath, look around, and enjoy the adventure—you might just discover a hidden corner of Marrakech you’d never have seen otherwise.
