The Truth About Morocco Tourist Attractions (What’s Worth It & What’s Not)

When we first planned our Morocco trip, every guidebook seemed to list the same tourist attractions. But after visiting, we realized some were magical—and others were, honestly, a bit overrated. To save you time and money, here’s our honest breakdown of Morocco tourist attractions: what’s worth it, and what’s not.

Marrakech Medina – Worth It (With Patience)

The bustling souks of Marrakech are chaotic, colorful, and unforgettable. Yes, it can feel overwhelming and touristy, but it’s still one of the best places to experience Moroccan life.

🌟 Why Go: The energy, the colors, the food—it’s Morocco at full volume.
⚠️ Downside: Crowds, touts, and aggressive vendors.
Verdict: Worth it— just go prepared and bargain with a smile.

Chefchaouen – The Blue City – Worth It

This Instagram-famous spot really is as dreamy as the photos. Wandering the blue-painted alleys feels like stepping into a storybook.

🌟 Why Go: Unique architecture and a relaxed mountain vibe.
⚠️ Downside: It gets crowded with day-trippers.
Verdict: Worth it— especially if you stay overnight to enjoy the quiet evenings.

Casablanca (Outside Hassan II Mosque) – Skip It

Casablanca is Morocco’s economic hub, not its cultural heart. Apart from the stunning Hassan II Mosque, most travelers find it underwhelming compared to other cities.

🌟 Why Go: The mosque alone is breathtaking.
⚠️ Downside: The city itself feels modern and less atmospheric.
Verdict: Skip it— unless you’re passing through for a flight.

Aït Ben Haddou – Worth It

This ancient fortified village looks like a movie set—because it often is (Gladiator, Game of Thrones). It’s an incredible step back in time.

🌟 Why Go: UNESCO site, cinematic scenery, and history.
⚠️ Downside: It’s a bit touristy and best visited with a guide.
Verdict: Worth it— especially as a stop en route to the Sahara.

Ouzoud Waterfalls – Debatable

They’re pretty, but also crowded and surrounded by tourist traps. If you’re short on time, you won’t miss much by skipping them.

🌟 Why Go: Monkeys, waterfalls, and a cool escape from city heat.
⚠️ Downside: Long travel time from Marrakech for what you get.
Verdict: Skip it— unless you’re already nearby.

Essaouira – Worth It

This coastal town is breezy, artsy, and much calmer than Marrakech. It’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the Atlantic.

🌟 Why Go: Fresh seafood, laid-back vibe, historic walls.
⚠️ Downside: Too windy for serious beach lounging.
Verdict: Worth it— especially if you like culture and charm.

Volubilis Roman Ruins – Worth It (If You Love History)

An impressive archaeological site, with mosaics and columns standing tall against rolling hills.

🌟 Why Go: A glimpse into Morocco’s Roman past.
⚠️ Downside: Limited shade and signage.
Verdict: Worth it— but bring water and sun protection.

Morocco Tourist Attractions—Choose Wisely

Morocco is packed with incredible attractions, but not all are equal. For first-timers, we’d say Marrakech, Chefchaouen, the Sahara, Essaouira, and Aït Ben Haddou are musts. Casablanca and Ouzoud? Not so much. With limited time, choose wisely—and spend more energy on the places that truly showcase Morocco’s magic.

Disposable Hotel Slippers

We love hotel slippers, and some hotels give them and some do not, so we like to be prepared. Plus, the best part is, we can throw them out when we leave the hotel and make our suitcase lighter instead of carrying traditional bedroom slippers that we use at home.

We love these compression cubes! We are notorious over-packers, and these packing cubes help us keep our suitcase organized and underweight!
