When we first booked our trip, we quickly realized South Africa weather isn’t one-size-fits-all. This country is huge — so you can expect beaches, mountains, deserts, and bush all with their own seasons. Here’s exactly what to expect month by month, plus our tips for where to go and what to pack.

January

Weather: Peak summer. Hot, sunny days with afternoon thunderstorms inland. Coastal areas like Cape Town and Durban are perfect beach weather.

Average temps: 25–35°C (77–95°F) inland, 20–30°C (68–86°F) on the coast.

Best for: Cape Town beaches, Garden Route road trips, summer festivals.

February

Weather: Still hot and sunny — the tail end of summer rains in Kruger and Johannesburg. Cape Town is at its driest and warmest.

Average temps: Similar to January.

Best for: Wine tasting in Stellenbosch, surfing in Jeffrey’s Bay, city exploring.

March

Weather: Summer starts easing into autumn. Still warm but with fewer crowds and less rain. Kruger begins to dry out — good for early safaris.

Average temps: 20–30°C (68–86°F).

Best for: Garden Route, safaris in Kruger, Cape Winelands.

April

Weather: Autumn in full swing. Warm days, cooler evenings. Safari season kicks in as vegetation thins.

Average temps: 15–28°C (59–82°F).

Best for: Safari in Kruger or Addo, hiking the Drakensberg, quiet beaches.

Weather: A local favorite! Dry and sunny in most places, chilly nights in the interior. Wildlife is easy to spot.
